If you are planning to tweet from the marksmanship event t the Rio Olympic games, don’t look for the relevant emoji on your iOS or Windows Phone.

Apple and Microsoft have worked to veto the addition of the graphic from the new set of Olympics-relevant emojis the Unicode Consortium was set to add to the emoji library to celebrate the event.

The move was apparently championed by Apple at the Unicode quarterly meeting last May, with Microsoft also speaking out against the addition.

The move is likely related to several mass shooting events in recent months, but it seems more likely to frustrate those who talk in emojis than those doing the actual shooting.
