In a blog post Microsoft revealed that the company has sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses to date.

The number is the first official mention of the sales rate of the OS after Microsoft revealed that it sold 4 million licenses in the 3 days after the launch, indicating the run rate has remained about the same as after the launch- quite an achievement.

Microsoft revealed the information first to industry and financial analysts, investors and media at Credit Suisse 2012 , and also confirmed that Windows 8 was outpacing Windows 7 in terms of upgrades.

Tami Reller, Windows Chief Marketing and Financial Officer said:

“The journey is just beginning, but I am pleased to announce today that we have sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses so far.”

Microsoft also announced thats several apps in the Windows 8 store has passed the $25,000 revenue mark, which is in fact pretty great news, and will hopefully result in more developers investing in quality apps in the store.

Microsoft has said they aim to sell 400 million Windows 8 licenses in the first year, and at this rate it appears the company is right on the mark.
