Microsoft’s Windows Update is the subject of another gaffe by the firm.
Users who had chosen to skip every other Windows Update, i.e upgrade to every other Windows 10 build discovered that they were being prompted to download Windows 10 version 1709 if they were on version 1703.
People had complained about Windows 10 stripping the ability to control when you could update your PC, and Microsoft had allowed users to defer updates in response. The revelation that your PC can still override your preferences will naturally burn some of that trust away.
Microsoft delivered the following update in its Knowledgebase posts, acknowledging the error.
If you’re currently running Windows 10 version 1507, version 1511, version 1607, or version 1703, you can expect to receive a notification that states that your device has to have the latest security updates installed. Windows Update will them try to update your device, Windows 10 version 1607 and version 1703 are not yet at “end of service.” However, they must update the latest version of Windows 10 to ensure protection from the latest security threats.
Microsoft is aware that this notification was incorrectly delivered to some Windows 10 version 1703 devices that had a user-defined feature update deferral period configured, Microsoft mitigated this issue on March 8, 2018.
Microsoft is poised to release the Windows 10 Spring Creators Update — version 1803 sooner rather than later, and its hopeful that the firm would have smoothened out its Windows Update issues sooner rather than later.
