Meta Taps Scale AI’s CEO for Inside Intel in the Race to Build Smarter Models
Meta just brought in a heavyweight from the AI supply chain. Alexandr Wang, CEO of Scale AI, is now advising Meta’s top AI team. This move, reported Monday by Bloomberg, gives Meta rare access to a founder who has worked behind the scenes with almost every major AI company out there.
Wang’s company, Scale AI, supplies massive datasets that train models for OpenAI, Anthropic, Cohere, and others. His new advisory role raises eyebrows, given how deeply Scale has worked with Meta’s rivals. According to sources, Meta hopes to tap into that expertise as it sharpens its own in-house model, Llama 3, and prepares to launch Llama 4.

Wang hasn’t joined Meta as an employee. Instead, he’s providing external advice while continuing to lead Scale. Meta says the partnership doesn’t create conflicts, but the optics are striking. Scale’s influence across the entire AI industry makes Wang’s shift more than a routine hire.
The timing adds weight. Meta is racing to catch up with OpenAI and Google DeepMind. Llama 3 arrived in April, and the company is already running internal tests for its next model. Meanwhile, Wang has positioned himself as one of the few people with a clear picture of how these models train and scale.
Bringing him in may give Meta an edge. It may also raise fresh questions about how close AI builders should get to their infrastructure providers.
