Instagram has just launched an update to its web apps today, both on desktop and mobile. With this update, Instagram web users now have the capability to receive notifications from any supported browser.

This includes comments, new followers and likes, but not direct messages as neither of the web experiences support that functionality just yet.

Users will immediately be prompted upon opening Instagram on their browser to enable these new notifications, which means there will be relatively little friction for new users.

Instagram over the past few years has moved from a solely mobile app-based experience to one that now exists on the mobile and desktop web in addition to a Windows 10 desktop app. With the addition of notifications, those users who prefer to use the web apps for whatever reason will now have a more native experience.
