Earlier this year, Instagram added and then removed GIPHY gif integration from their platform due to a proliferation of racist gifs spawned by poor moderation practices.

The gig integration would have allowed users to create gif stickers from images sourced from GIPHY’s extensive library but was temporarily shut down.

The firm took down Giphy integration pending an investigation into the racist gif and has now restored said integration with the conclusion of said investigation and amendments to GIPHY’s moderation policy, in order to prevent similar events from occuring.

Instagram delivered the following statement to TechCrunch:

We’ve been in close contact with GIPHY throughout this process and we’re confident that they have put measures in place to ensure that Instagram users have a good experience”

GIPHY for its part told TechCrunch in a statement that:

To anyone who was affected: we’re sorry. We take full responsibility for this recent event and under no circumstances does GIPHY condone or support this kind of content. We have also finished a full investigation into our content moderations systems and processes and have made specific changes to our process to ensure something like this does not happen again.
