It looks like Samsung might have competition as Huawei has confirmed that the company is working on a 5G enabled foldable smartphone.

This news came just after the launch of Huawei Mate 20 in London post which the CEO of Huawei did an interview with Digital Trends. Ken Hu, said that the company is working on Foldable phones with 5G support.

We are working on foldable phones. Foldable 5G phones.

– Ken Hu, CEO, Huawei

Hu also confirmed that the phones might launch sometime next year. He said “maybe sometime we will launch that, but not this time”, and that the phone was “not commercialized yet”.  This might be his way of saying that the prototype exists right now but it won’t be commercial just yet. With Samsung already ahead of Huawei with their concepts and patents of different foldable devices, it would be interesting to see who launches the first device in the market. That said, 2019 might turn out to be an interesting year for smartphone manufacturers but do we really need foldable smartphones?
