Here's How Google is Using AI for Environmental Conservation

Google has introduced its inaugural Google for Startups Accelerator: AI for Nature, a 10-week program supporting 15 early-stage startups from North and Latin America that are leveraging artificial intelligence to address environmental challenges. The initiative provides participants with mentorship from Google experts, technical assistance, and access to advanced technologies, including AI/ML, Cloud, and Maps.

Selected from a competitive pool, these startups are tackling issues such as biodiversity loss, ecosystem restoration, and climate resilience. Notable participants include SenseNet, focusing on early wildfire detection; Savimbo, working to protect Indigenous communities and prevent deforestation; and eDNA Explorer, developing AI-powered solutions for ecosystem protection.

Other participants are employing technologies like satellite imagery, blockchain, and IoT to enhance environmental monitoring and conservation efforts. For instance, Bloom Alert uses satellite tech and AI to improve water production in desalination and mining, while Ecotrace Solutions ensures end-to-end traceability in the agribusiness supply chain through blockchain and AI.

Upon completion of the accelerator, startups will join Google’s alumni network, gaining ongoing support, including access to mentors, expert insights, and events. This program aligns with Google’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and technological innovation.
