Key notes

  • Apps without verified trader information will be removed from the EU App Store starting in February 2025.
  • The DSA requires apps on the EU App Store to verify trader status by providing contact details and app documentation.
  • Under the DSA, platforms must remove illegal content and address disinformation.

Apple reminds developers their apps must comply with the EU’s Digital Service Act (DSA) regulation to be enlisted on the EU’s App Store.

To comply with the DSA, you must verify your trader status by giving out your verified contact details, including an address, phone number, and email, as well as the app’s documentation via App Store Connect. Then, Apple will publish them for transparency across all 27 EU countries.

“As a reminder, Account Holders or Admins in the Apple Developer Program need to enter trader status in App Store Connect for apps on the App Store in the European Union in order to comply with the Digital Services Act,” says Apple.

Apple previously said in October that apps that have no verified trader information cannot be submitted for review. And now, in just a few weeks from today, apps without verified trader status will be removed from the EU App Store altogether until compliance is achieved.

Last year, the EU said that it was considering to fine Elon Musk directly for violations of the DSA by X, his social media platform, or to fine X itself.

Because, under the DSA, platforms must remove illegal content and address disinformation, with fines potentially reaching up to 6% of the platform’s annual revenue. It also allows for temporary suspension after penalties.

But that may go nowhere because experts say that X suspension could be difficult. While the DSA and DMA could theoretically allow suspension, proving them is another complex business.
