Disable Surface Home Button

When Surface Pro 3 was originally few months back, few artists like Penny Arcade’s  Gabriel pointed out the annoying home button issue while they are drawing on Surface. Whenever he was trying to draw, he kept brushing that home button and getting kicked out to the desktop. Microsoft Surface team invited him to the campus and a team of designers and engineers watched him actually draw to find a solution to the issue. While they are trying to fix the issue from software side, you can disable the home button as a whole when you are going to use it for drawing.

To disable or enable the Windows button, perform the following steps:

  1. Open up Windows Device Manager – an easy way to do this is to open the Charms bar and search “Device Manager”
  2. Select “System Devices”
  3. Click on the “Surface Home Button” item in the list
  4. On the “Surface Home Button Properties” dialog box, select the “Driver” tab
  5. Click the “Disable” button”

Once you have completed the above steps, tapping on home button will not initiate any action which will allow you to use the Surface in the position you want. You can also enable it back when needed. One main issue with this method is that volume and power buttons will also get disabled when you disable Surface Home button. But when you have Type Cover connected to it, you can use it to control volume and waking up the device when needed.
