Google today revealed the two new revolutionary features coming to Pixel 4 devices which will be released later this year.
First, Google is including Soli motion-sensing radar in the Pixel 4 device. This new sensor will allow the phone to detect small motions around the phone including hand gestures. You can use this feature to skip songs, snooze alarms, and silence phone calls, just by waving your hand. Motion Sense feature will be available in select Pixel countries.
Back in 2015, Google first demoed Project Soli at Google I/O conference. Soli is a purpose-built interaction sensor that uses radar for motion tracking of the human hand. Think of Soli as a Kinect sensor that can track sub-millimeter motion at high speeds with great accuracy. Google has also created a gesture interaction language that will allow users to control devices with a simple, universal set of gestures. Motion Sense feature is limited to few gestures for now, but it will evolve over time. Once Google opens up the SDK, app developers can start taking advantage of this advanced chip.
Google is also including advanced face recognition tech in Pixel 4 to make the face unlock process even more seamless. Soli sensor will proactively turn on the face unlock sensors, recognizing that you may want to unlock your phone. If the face unlock sensors and algorithms recognize you, the phone will open as you pick it up. You don’t have to lift the device all the way up and pose your face to the phone.
Google mentioned that Soli sensor data is processed on your phone always, so it’s never saved or shared with other Google services.
