At Google I/O 2018, we had a first look at Google Maps AR features. Google demonstrated how animated guides can help us in navigating the real world more easily. Google has now started the roll-out of AR features to select users in the US. The Wall Street Journal yesterday posted a hands-on video of these upcoming AR features, check out the video below.

When you search for a place in Google Maps, along with regular ‘Directions’ button, you will have the new “Start AR” button to access the new experience. In this new experience, you will have live camera view covering most of the screen with an overlay of animated indicators for directions. On the bottom of the screen, you can find regular overhead maps. It is important to note that these AR features conserve significant amount of battery and mobile data.

If you are a Google Maps Local Guide in the US, you should check out this feature today.
