Google has officially launched Cloud WAN, opening its powerful global network to external customers for the first time. The move comes as enterprises face growing complexity in managing connectivity across sites, cloud services, and internet access — especially with rising AI-driven data demands.
The announcement follows Google’s critical role during the March 2024 West Africa subsea cable disruption, where its Equiano subsea cable helped maintain internet services while others struggled. Google’s global network now spans 2 million miles of fiber, 33 subsea cables, and 202 network edge locations, connecting 42 cloud regions and 127 cloud zones.

Built to evolve with technological shifts, Google’s network has adapted from supporting Search and YouTube to the massive data loads of cloud computing and AI. Innovations like multi-shard horizontal architecture have expanded bandwidth sevenfold between 2020 and 2025.
Customers like Nestlé are already benefiting from Cloud WAN, reporting a 40% boost in application performance and reduced costs after shifting to Google’s Premium Tier network.
“Connectivity has never been more critical,” said Google’s network team. “With Cloud WAN, we’re helping businesses simplify their networks, lower costs, and prepare for the AI-driven future.”
