Smartwatches with embedded cameras have always been awkward at best, but a new patent by Google may just show the way to a new take on the idea that can actually work.

The design patent dating to mid-2017 and published on the 27th August 2019 by the USPTO includes 7 sketches which show a smartwatch with a camera embedded under the display.

Titled “camera watch”,  the single-lens camera would presumably use Google’s magic software to deliver great results despite the constrained form factor.

A Pixel Watch has of course been rumoured for some time, and Google recently purchased Fossil’s smartwatch division for $40 million, and with a cool differentiating factor such as this, we may finally see the device come to life.

The full patent can be seen here.
