OpenAI has propped ChatGPT, its AI-powered chatbot, as one of the hottest things that come out in this age of the AI race. And, that’s not wrong. It can help with so many things to do—especially with the reasoning-capable OpenAI o1 model—and now, some users spotted that ChatGPT can text you first “to check in and see how things went.”

A Redditor has now gone viral after ChatGPT initiated a conversation with them, which is unusual since interactions typically start with the user. The AI inquired about the user’s experience settling into high school, and it does raise some eyebrows as to whether it’s part of the Microsoft-backed company’s A/B testing for a new feature.

“How was your first week at high school? Did you settle in well?,” the chatbot asks.

“I just wanted to check in and see how things went with your first week of high school,” the chatbot says. When asked if this is part of the new update, it responds that it’s a feature of the update that lets it follow up on previous conversations.

Other users chimed in, claiming that the AI chatbot had also initiated a conversation with them. One said, “I asked it last week about some health symptoms I had. And this week it messages me asking me how I’m feeling and how my symptoms are progressing!! Freaked me the fuck out.”

The new feature is apparently part of the o1 model preview for the AI chatbot—this might be testing how users interact with it.

It seems like OpenAI is trying to make conversations with the chatbot feel more natural and personal, similar to their efforts with the humanoid Voice Mode where another user on X also claimed that the chatbot was starting a conversation after the Advanced Voice mode was turned on.

OpenAI o1 is now available to paid Plus and Team users, as well as Enterprise and Edu users. The company also plans to bring the o1-mini to free users, although the exact date has not been announced.
