Key notes

  • Facebook prioritizes young adults with user growth and revamps core product to stay relevant.
  • Upgraded AI personalizes Reels and Feed recommendations, aiming to be the best by 2026.
  • Meta Llama, an open-source AI project, aims to enhance social discovery on Facebook.

Facebook is prioritizing attracting young adults back to the platform. From what I have noticed, most young adults are moving towards Instagram or TikTok. They’ve reported five consecutive quarters of user growth in this age group within the US and Canada, which brings the number of daily active young adult users to over 40 million—their highest in three years.

And now, looking forward to the next 20 years, the social media giant is aiming to be relevant during young adults’ life transitions, such as moving, starting college, or landing their first job.

“We’re focused on two big things: building the next generation of social media for young adults and leaning into new product capabilities enabled by AI.”

Facebook talks about features like Marketplace for finding furniture deals, Reels and Groups for exploring interests, local community, and small business connections, and even Facebook Dating.

Facebook said that they’ve upgraded recommendation technology for Reels and the Feed, which gives users more personalized content suggestions. This includes a new model architecture tested with Facebook Reels that has improved results.

Facebook plans to implement this technology across more products over the next year, including its entire video platform and Feed recommendations. By the end of 2026, Facebook aims to have the world’s leading recommendation technology.

“By the end of 2026, our goal is to have the world’s best recommendation technology.”

Facebook also to build one of the world’s top collections of open-source AI models, tools, and resources.
