Starting today, Facebook users on Android and iOS can log in using passkeys – a new option that replaces passwords with fingerprint, face ID, or device PIN. Meta confirmed the rollout on June 18 and says Messenger will get support in the coming months.
You can create and manage your passkey directly inside the Accounts Center, tucked into Facebook’s Settings. Once enabled, it lets you log in without typing anything, just authenticate like you already do to unlock your phone.
Passkeys use a device-bound credential stored locally. That means even Meta doesn’t see your biometric data. The technology comes from the FIDO Alliance, a group working to kill off passwords by replacing them with faster, safer login systems.

Unlike SMS codes or old-school passwords, passkeys block common attack vectors. Hackers can’t steal them through phishing or guess them with brute-force tools. If someone sends you a fake login link, your phone simply won’t hand over the credentials.
Meta says you’ll still have access to traditional login options on devices that don’t support passkeys. But once you’ve set one up, it becomes the easiest way to get into Facebook.
And this won’t stop at login. Meta plans to tie passkeys into Meta Pay for autofilling payment details and encrypting message backups, especially once Messenger support kicks in. Passkeys won’t just protect access, they’ll protect what’s inside.
