Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot blew my mind away during E3 2019. As a fan of the Dragon Ball series, seeing a AAA open-world RPG for the first time, it appeared to be everything I ever wanted, but now it’s planned to be a little bit more than that.

Described as a fresh new take on Goku’s story, the upcoming ARPG will introduce new backstories that have never been told before, not even in the manga. Announced by Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama on the official Bandai Namco Twitter, fans can expect more lore for existing DBZ characters.

“Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an action RP, full of the Dragon Ball universe,” Toriyama writes. “It includes backstories that haven’t been told in the manga, and I’m sure fans will truly be able to take a deep dive into the world.”

“It’s a fresh new take on the franchise as you re-live the moment where Goku discovers his Saiyan bloodline and birth name, Kakarot. Experience the battles as they grow to become more and more unrelenting and fierce through cutting edge game visuals. I hope you enjoy the game!”

This sounds like a double-edged sword for fans of the series. While it is great that we’ll be introduced to more story details, there’s also the change of messing with what’s already been established. For example, we’ve already seen that Androids populate the world at the start of the series’ Saiyan arc in Kakarot. That group of characters were only introduced in the Cell Saga. (They came from the future, it’s a whole shebang.)

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is in development for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
