It has become more and more normal to store our personal data in the cloud, on Microsoft, Google or Apple’s servers.

There, however, the files are open to scrutiny by those who do not necessarily have your interest at heart, leading to issues such as having your account suspended, losing access to your files and even criminal prosecution.

If you would rather look after your own files, but still would like access to the convenience of cloud storage ownCloud has a solution for you.

ownCloud is a self-hosted file sync and share server. It provides access to your data through a web interface, sync clients or WebDAV while providing a platform to view, sync and share across devices easily — all under your control. ownCloud’s open architecture is extensible via a simple but powerful API for applications and plugins and it works with any storage.

The service already has a desktop sync client for Windows, but have now also released a UWP app for phone and PC. It also has clients for iOS, Android and servers.

The client offers:

  • Works on all Windows 10 devices!
  • Open source software
  • Synchronise your files with a background task. On phones it will only sync while your device is charging to save battery.
  • Upload, download and manage files and folders.
  • View your images or stream videos directly from your ownCloud.

The free app can be found in the Windows Store here.
