The human body is incredibly sensitive to light and dark cues.  The release of hormones associated with wakefulness in relation to bright environments, and sleepiness in dark environments, is responsible for our circadian rhythm.

Those of us who have difficulty waking up in the morning (and staying awake), would greatly benefit from a light-based alarm clock; as they project an increasingly bright beam of light into the room as you wake up, which mimics natural sunrise.

Now, Amazon is offering a similar feature on Alexa, which collaborates with Smart Lights to control the lighting of the entire room.

To activate the skill, just command Alexa to set an alarm “with lights”.  Likewise, if you want to gradually dim the lighting to peacefully drift off to sleep, you can add lights to sleep timers.

If you’re looking to make it to that class in time, or just beat the post-prandial sleepiness, this may be something you want to look into.

The feature should roll out to the US within the next week.
