Windows 8 comes with the latest version of Microsoft’s DirectX framework, version 11.1. . It supports WDDM 1.2 for increased performance, features improved integration of Direct2D, Direct3D, and DirectCompute, and includes DirectXMath, XAudio2, and XInput libraries from the XNA framework. It also features stereoscopic 3D support for gaming and video.
These are all pretty desirable features, and it appears Windows users will have to upgrade to Windows 8 to get it.
Microsoft Program Manager Daniel Moth on MSDN said:
With DirectX 11.1, WARP was enhanced with (among other things) support for DirectCompute and hence it is one of the accelerators for C++ AMP. DirectX 11.1 is part of Windows 8, just like DirectX 11 was part of Windows 7. DirectX 11 was made available for Vista (bing it), but at this point there is no plan for DirectX 11.1 to be made available on Windows 7
Many PC users reluctant to upgrade to Windows 8 are complaining their installations will not get access to the latest features and some are concerned that limiting DirectX 11.1 to only a subset of PCs will delay support by developers.
On the other hand the upgrade to Windows 8 is pretty cheap, especially now, and those who upgraded are pretty happy, so it seems fair to say if you want the latest Windows 8 features you should get Windows 8.
