ItBusiness.ca reports that Delta is upgrading their Nokia Lumia 820s to Nokia Lumia 1520 handsets.

Currently flight attendees are using the 820s take in-flight food orders, but the larger-screened handsets will let them start selling seat upgrades right on the flight.

The mobile devices used by Delta’s workers are connected thanks to Ku-band satellite Internet provided by Gogo Inc. A secure WiFi network means the credit card payments, accepted via a phone attachment, can now be checked in real-time instead of after a flight touches down.

“We weren’t telling customers we weren’t doing that. So we’d just swipe the card and you’d get your treat, and only later would we find out if that was a good card or not,” said says Darrell Haskin, the director of IT for Delta. “So there was a lot of loss that way.”

Delta switched to a Microsoft-based solution 18 months ago and the company has not looked back since.

Microsoft is showing its customers that it’s easy to build out mobile solutions on its Azure cloud platform, said Ray Wang, the founder of Constellation Research. It’s focused on building out more vertical capabilities with Dynamics AX, particularly for the retail and manufacturing sectors.

“It’s actually pretty easy if you’re a Microsoft shop to deploy on mobile devices,” he said.
