According to research analyst Shaw Wu from Kaufman Brothers, Dell is close to releasing a smartphone. The company, well known to the Windows Mobile community for its Axim line, has apparently been working on the device for two years now.
Wu suggests that Dell needs to respond to the growing smartphone market as it erodes its own laptop business, and not entering the field would leave it at a competitive disadvantage other companies like HP, Asus, Apple and Acer.
Their ambitions are underscored by hiring a former Motorola executive to head up its consumer division some time ago.
At this point it is not known what OS the phone will run, but given their Windows Mobile heritage the OS is definitely in there with a shot.
