ChatGPT search

The race to the top of the AI-powered search engine’s food chain is heating up, especially with ChatGPT Search now launching for everyone without signing up. Though, it seems like OpenAI still has a long way to catch up with Google.

SimilarWeb, a data aggregation company, reveals that ChatGPT is currently ranked the sixth worldwide of the top 10 most visited websites in the world per January 2025 (on desktop, excluding data from mobile). It’s the AI chatbot’s highest rank just yet, but it still a lot of gap to bridge to Google, which ranks first with almost 30% of the traffic share.

In a much more overall sense, ChatGPT ranks the eighth in most visited websites in the world (both desktop and mobile data combined), averaging 6 minutes and 36 seconds and a 33.31% bounce rate.

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s boss, reposts the statistics on X, “man, still a long way to go to run down google.”

But recently though, OpenAI launched “Deep Research,” an AI agent that lets you do multi-step internet research and is capable of generating expert-level reports on complex topics. While currently slow and prone to errors, it is available for $200/month in the Pro tier, with plans to expand to lower and even tiers.

And once that comes to fruition, ChatGPT may have a competitive edge that Google currently doesn’t: an AI feature that thoroughly searches the web and reasons it perfectly for you.
