Key notes
- OpenAI gives free users access to browse web, data analysis, file upload and custom GPTs.
- Free users can now use custom AI models, analyze charts and ask questions about photos.
- Paid subscribers get higher message limits with the latest GPT-4o model.
OpenAI has made big changes to its free tiers. Several features previously exclusive to paying subscribers are now available to free users.
This comes after the recent release of GPT-4o, OpenAI’s latest AI model. The company previously hinted at this change when they announced GPT-4o, which means that more advanced features would be coming to the free tier.
What’s new, though? Free users can now use functionalities like browsing the web to answer questions, data analysis, file uploads, and access to custom GPTs created by third-party developers. These features can summarize uploaded documents, have ChatGPT search for information to answer their questions, and explore various custom AI models.
While free users can’t create their own custom GPTs, they can discover and use creations from third-party developers.
Free-tier users also gain access to data analysis and chart creation tools, allowing them to connect their cloud storage services like Google Drive and OneDrive.
If you’re a paid user, don’t feel down. There are still advantages to the paid tier, ChatGPT Plus. Paid subscribers receive a higher limit on messages and conversations with GPT-4o. When free users reach their limit, they are automatically switched to the older GPT-3.5 model.
One feature notably missing from both tiers is the Sky voice, which resembles Scarlett Johansson’s voice in the movie Her. OpenAI has discontinued Sky, but other voice stays visible on ChatGPT.
Free users now have access to a broader range of features, while paying subscribers retain benefits like higher message limits.
