- A “No Gen AI” seal has been introduced for indie games to confirm no AI was used.
Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, indeed, uses AI, and it’s not a surprising call.
The Microsoft-owned game publisher mentions at the end of the game’s Steam page that, “Our team uses generative AI tools to help develop some in game assets.”
And it’s not a surprising call, because earlier this year, Valve introduced new rules for games on Steam that use AI. Developers now have to tell players if their game includes AI-made content like art or sound and make a full disclosure on the game’s Steam page.
They must also make sure this content isn’t illegal or copying someone else’s work. If the game uses AI to create content while itโs being played, developers need to explain the safety measures in place.
But then, as Black Ops 6 openly states that it’s used AI to improve its game, a game developer has introduced a “No Gen AI” seal for indie games to assure users that generative AI was not used in their development.
The seal, inspired by the Nintendo Seal of Quality, is free for developers to download and use on Steam and other storefronts through an honor system.
Activision released Black Ops 6 back in October 2024 and it was a hit, thanks to Microsoft’s launch on Xbox Game Pass. It’s also a hit on PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series’ rival console, with Black Ops 6 topping the most download games chart for several consecutive months.
