  • Brave claims Apple & Google make it difficult to switch phone browsers, hindering competition.
  • EU’s mandated browser choice screen led to a surge in Brave downloads on iPhones.

Brave browser, which is commonly known for its privacy focus, accuses Apple and Google of making it difficult to switch default smartphone browsers.

Brave points to a recent surge in their iOS app downloads following the EU’s implementation of a mandatory browser choice screen on iPhones. This suggests that users are interested in alternatives to the pre-installed browser (Safari on iOS) when given a clear option.

Brave argues that Apple and Google prioritize their browsers (Safari and Chrome, respectively) by making it cumbersome to switch defaults. This, they claim, limits competition and restricts user freedom.

Brave shared an image of a line graph depicting the number of installations of its browser on iOS devices between mid-January and early March. During most of this period, the number of daily installs remained stable, fluctuating around 7,500, but after the iOS update was released on March 6th, there was a sharp increase in installations, with the number soaring to just over 11,000. Here is the graph on X.

Apple and Google now have to offer options to change default browsers in the EU.

Overall, Brave raises a valid point: Making it easier to switch browsers empowers users and potentially encourages a more competitive landscape.

Users can find instructions for changing default browsers on both iOS and Android through official channels.
