Looking for the best Opera GX mods? The great thing about this browser is that it’s easy to transform with mods. I scoured the official store to find add-ons for wallpapers, sounds, and other exciting features.
Here are my top picks!
10 Best Opera GX Mods
The following ten best Opera GX mods are based on popularity, variety, and personal taste. I use them on Windows Desktop, so, let’s dive in:
1. Cyberpunk 2077
The official Cyberpunk 2077 mod is all the rage, and for good reason. You get a beautiful and vibrant dark-mode wallpaper, showing off the glowing Night City streets. What’s more, this is fully customizable and one of the new live wallpapers.
There are also official soundtracks for background music and familiar futuristic keyboard and browser sounds.
Now a full hub, you can immerse yourself in the game world with news, streams, and game scores. Moreover, the interactive world map is a great way to chart out your gaming session, while planning character creator builds in-browser.
If, like me, you haven’t played in a while, Opera GX has offered a fun way to get pulled back in.
2. LoFi Chill
I love listening to LoFi music on YouTube to relax, so Opera GX’s LoFi Chill mod is a natural extension of that vibe.
You get the chilled-out girl and cat background and some nice low-key keyboard and browser sounds.
Of course, the most important feature is the LoFi beats playing in the background.
If you’re new to the genre, it’s excellent for studying, working, or general browsing, when you want some stress-free focus.
There are several similar mods, including Aggressive LoFi, if hip-hop isn’t your thing.
3. Horror
Let’s get scared! The backstory of Horror is waking up in a blood-filled empty hospital, with no knowledge of the events that preceded it.
It sets the scene with a light-flickering video wallpaper and unnerving background music. It then draws you in further via its keyboard and browser sounds.
Typing mimics cold footsteps on the hospital floor. Opening a new tab opens a new door, while closing one gives that chilling feeling of a door closing behind you. It also applies a fuzzy shader when browsing pages, like looking through the lens of a camera.
If you’re a fan of horror games, some late-night creepypasta or True Crime Reddit with the Horror mod is quite an experience. It’s a shame that the official Resident Evil mods lack this level of detail.
4. CyberDeck
CyberDeck is a combination of the cyberpunk aesthetic with relaxing background music.
It has an electric cyberpunk cityscape for its background and applies the popular cyberpsychosis shader when browsing. To get the full effect you’ll need to be in dark mode.
Its keyboard and browser sounds are fittingly futuristic, with different pitches and tones as you type. I found it immersive and far from distracting, though you might want to disable the shader when doing some longer reading.
5. GX Boy
If you grew up on 8-bit gaming, GX Boy time warps you back to the era of limited colors, graphics, and sounds.
This mod has a nostalgic charm with an old-school gaming wallpaper and simple sounds. These evoke memories of consoles like the Atari 2600 and Sega Master System.
For example, the Opera GX Ram Limiter and Hot Tabs Killer sound like you just died or lost a game. Opening a new tab is like starting a game. Meanwhile, the keyboard sounds mimic the typical menu screens of the time.
Couple this with the 8-bit shader and browsing the web becomes a pixelated heaven.
While the background music isn’t particularly offensive, I wouldn’t use this mod long-term, as the other sounds can get distracting. Moreover, an 8-bit style overlay isn’t always good on the eyes.
Nonetheless, it’s a fun throwback, so why not?
6. Arcade Alley
If you like live wallpapers, Arcade Alley’s voxel art loops glowing arcade signs, billboards, and reflective water.
It has a retro gaming look, and the alley is a dystopian “hangout for punks and gamers alike.”
It’s a wallpaper only. However, you can easily combine it with other retro gaming sounds, shaders, and background music.
7. Adventurer Camp
Adventurer Camp is a live wallpaper mod with a welcoming atmosphere and lots of customizations.
The animated pixel art style features a camp, where travelers sit by the fire. In the foreground is a flowing river.
You can configure it for all four seasons and different daytimes. Alternatively, the latter changes dynamically with your system clock!
A summer night glows warm with lush trees, as ducks swim down the river. In winter, snow adorns the landscape, with ice replacing the ducks.
Customizable effects include fireflies, rain/snow, and falling leaves, and you can even adjust the animations of the adventurers.
7. YouTube Recolor
YouTube Recolor gives uniformity to your browsing experience by matching YouTube pages with your GX settings.
This includes native and custom colors and themes. It also works alongside any of your other mods.
8. Computer Terminal
This advanced live wallpaper turns into a Matrix-style computer terminal running the green flowing code.
It works best in dark mode and the native green Hackerman theme. I also like the shader from the above-mentioned CyberDeck mod, which has the same Matrix effect when browsing.
You can modify the contents of the wallpaper with eight different commands, including:
- OPERA – ASCII art version of the Opera logo.
- GAMEMAKER – ASCII art version of the GameMaker logo.
- PONG – Displays a game of Pong.
Features include mouse tracing, showing your system time and date, and your username.
You can also change the colors for the text and background if you get tired of the traditional green.
9. Tactile Keyboard
If you’ve adopted a touchscreen or use a softer membrane keyboard, you might be longing for that mechanical tactile response.
The Tactile Keyboard mod solves that with realistic keyboard sound effects.
It’s a simple but powerful audio tweak.
10. AMOLED Discord Theme
As the name suggests, this mod gives Discord an eye-friendly dark theme, which has been lacking natively.
There’s not much else to it, but it’s one of those useful tweaks you’ll only find with Opera GX.
How To Install the Best Opera GX Mods
If you’re new to Opera GX, installing mods is easy. Simply scroll to the M symbol in the left toolbar and click Store in the new window (Opera GX Mods Store). Now you can search, browse, and sort mods based on your preferences.
To configure your mods and GX settings, click the three-slider Easy Setup Icon, in the top right, followed by the Cog icon. You can then change individual settings like shaders, background music, etc.
