Apple warns users to either upgrade device or software as major malfunction looms

Apple is officially warning users of really old iOS devices to update to the latest available software or upgrade devices totally; as on November 3, these devices may begin to malfunction in regards to GPS location, time, and date.

Now luckily enough for most of us, this won’t be an issue, as this warning is for people who are still using devices like the iPhone 5 or earlier, and for users of the iPad 4th Gen or earlier. In order to avoid the forthcoming bug, those iPhone 5 and iPad 4th Gen users need to update to at least iOS 10.3.4, while older devices need to be updated to iOS 9.3.6, if available.

If you’re wondering exactly what bug you may have to look forward to, it’s a GPS Rollover bug, which may prevent some devices from being “able to maintain an accurate GPS position.”

“And functions that rely on the correct date and time – such as syncing with iCloud and fetching email – might not work.”

These users will have until just before midnight November 3rd to update their software, and if you miss the deadline, your device may not be able to receive software updates over WiFi at all, requiring you to connect your device to a computer with iTunes installed to update.
