Just a couple of days back, Apple rolled out the Apple Card to all the users in the US. The company first announced the Goldman-Sachs backed credit card back in March and is now shipping it out to the masses in the US.

While the credit card is a nice addition to Apple’s portfolio, the company did manage to hide a few details from the early adopters. According to a support webpage discovered by MacRumors, the titanium credit card can be damaged if stored in leather or denim. Apple claims its credit card is made with a “multi-layer coating process that’s added to the titanium base material”. In other words, if any metal scratches against the credit card, it could do some serious damage to the finish.

Apple is currently recommending users to store the credit card in some soft material which is not leather or denim. The company is also warning users to make sure it doesn’t come in contact with any loose metal/magnets which could demagnetize the strip. To clean the credit card, Apple suggests that the users should use a microfibre cloth dipped in water or isopropyl alcohol.

Don’t use window or household cleaners, compressed air, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, or abrasives to clean your titanium Apple Card.

Some fabrics, like leather and denim, might cause permanent discoloration that will not wash off.

How to safely store and carry your titanium Apple Card

  • Store your titanium Apple Card in a wallet, pocket, or bag made of soft materials.
  • Place your card in a slot in your wallet or billfold without touching another credit card. If two credit cards are placed in the same slot your card could become scratched.
  • Don’t place or store your titanium Apple Card card near magnets. If your card is placed close to a magnetic latch on a purse or bag, the magnetic strip can become demagnetized.
  • Don’t place your titanium Apple Card in a pocket or bag that contains loose change, keys, or other potentially abrasive objects.

This seems like too much work for a credit card which is usually stored in either a leather wallet or denim jeans. On top of that, Apple’s credit card doesn’t seem out of the ordinary or it doesn’t provide huge bonuses that are worth the effort. The 3% cashback and the security features are nice but are they enough to throw out your beloved leather wallet or your favourite jeans.

As the company has already started shipping cards out to the customers, it will be interesting to see how they will react when they find out that Apple credit cards can’t be stored with other cards or in a leather wallet. Well, I guess the only thing to do right now is to order a brand new Apple Credit Card case made out of plastic (remember no leather cases).
