Google is working on integrating the predictive back gesture feature into Chrome Custom Tabs (CCT) on Android behind a flag in Chrome.
Chrome Custom Tabs (CCT) let Android apps open web pages using the Chrome browser smoothly. They also allow changes like adjusting toolbar color, adding menu options, and customizing animations to match the app’s style
“When enabled, the OS will handle the back swipe for the last remaining CCT.”CCT Predictive back gesture flag description reads.

This feature improves Android’s navigation gestures by enabling the OS to predict user intent when swiping back. For example, instead of closing a tab, the gesture anticipates whether the user intends to navigate within the tab or exit it. This involves integrating Androidโs system-wide back gesture framework introduced in Android 13 with Chrome Custom Tabs functionality.
For developers, this change avoids the need to manage the back gesture manually for the last Custom Tab, as the OS will handle it.
