On May 13, 2025, Google kicked off I/O with “The Android Show: I/O Edition,” revealing Android 16 and major ecosystem updates. Android 16 brings a redesigned interface with the new Material 3 Expressive style, offering smoother animations, adaptive colors, and a forced dark mode for apps that haven’t implemented it.

The update adds “Live Updates,” which pins real-time notifications, such as ride shares or delivery status, directly to the lock screen. Android tablets get a refined desktop mode aimed at multitasking. Security has also improved: Android 16 blocks unauthorized system changes during calls, adds scam call alerts, and introduces tighter controls when screen sharing.

Gemini, Google’s new AI assistant, now replaces Google Assistant across Android, Wear OS, Android Auto, and Google TV. It brings more fluid, context-aware responses and deeper app integration. Wear OS 6 rolls out alongside it, promising 10% better battery life and support for Material 3’s design.

Google also rebranded its device tracker to “Find Hub,” which now locates not just personal devices but also friends and third-party trackers.

Android 16 will launch in June 2025, starting with Pixel phones. Developers can preview the features today, with more tools rolling out through the year.
