It was a blog entry on Minimally Minimal a few years back that made Andrew Kim famous on the internet. His design project, “The Next Microsoft,” proposed a connected, futuristic approach for the company and its products. His design work inspired widespread discussion and debate, and was covered by several major tech blogs. After few weeks, Xbox Design Studio team hired him to work on its future projects. It was recently reavelaed that Kim was part of the design team that developed the new Xbox One S.

Kim posted on his website that the Xbox One S was a very significant project for him personally, as the team was tasked with making a gaming console that “[didn’t] evoke traditional ‘gaming’ cues,” – all the while maintaining the Windows 10 design language within the new hardware. They also managed to “[dramatically reduce] the size of the device and removed the bulky external power supply,” which is a feat in itself.

The bad news now is that Kim has left Microsoft. Most recently, he was working as a Senior Designer at HoloLens and New devices group. He has now joined Tesla as a Lead Designer.
