On May 30, 2025, over 300 quality assurance workers at ZeniMax Media reached a tentative contract agreement with Microsoft after nearly two years of negotiations. Represented by the Communications Workers of America (CWA), the ZeniMax Workers United union includes employees from studios working on titles like Starfield and DOOM: The Dark Ages.

The proposed contract offers across-the-board wage increases, higher minimum salaries, job security provisions, comprehensive grievance procedures, and formal recognition for QA testers in game credits. It also includes an agreement allowing workers a voice in the use of artificial intelligence in game development.

ZeniMax Workers United, Microsoft’s first gaming union formed in January 2023, initiated contract talks later that year. The bargaining process included a one-day strike and a strike authorization vote in April 2025. The union plans to hold contract explanation meetings, with a ratification vote expected by June 20, 2025.

This agreement marks a significant milestone in the video game industry, setting a precedent for future labor negotiations. It reflects the growing trend of unionization within Microsoft’s gaming subsidiaries, including recent efforts at Bethesda Game Studios, ZeniMax Online Studios, and Blizzard Entertainment.
