Microsoft finally confirms Windows Phone 7 runs on Windows CE 7

Olivier Bloch, Microsoft Embedded technical evangelist, has finally revealed what we have believed to be true for quite some time – that Windows Phone 7 is based on the Windows CE 7 kernel.  Up to now it has been suspected by some, but most believed Windows CE 6.0, first released in 2006, was the real core. Olivier debunked this by simply saying “By the way, Windows Phone 7 is based on the Windows Embedded Compact 7 core”

Olivier insisted the kernel, not publicly released and oft delayed, was in fact under active development.

Windows CE is NOT dead. Our devs our heads down finalizing Windows Embedded Compact 7 that will ship soon and that Microsoft will support over the next 10 years (at least). Windows Embedded team is investing a lot in adding new features, creating new tools to support these new features, analyzing the Embedded market really seriously… Does that sound like a dead product? Definitively not.

Promising that we will hear a lot more about the kernel over the next few months, he promised “Lots of good things are coming.”

The Windows CE 7 kernel promises support for the following features, most of which will be recognized from Windows Phone 7 and has often been suggested as a media tablet OS:

• Dual Core Support (SMP, ARMv6)
• WIFI Positioning System
• Bluetooth 2.1
• Cellcore
• DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance)
• DRM
• Media Transfer Protocol
• IE7 Rendering Rich Media Plug-Ins
• NDIS 6.1 support
• UX C ++ XAML API using technologies like Windows Presentation Foundation and Silverlight for attractive and functional user interfaces
• Touch Input
