Microsoft will also ditch the realistic gun emoji

In a tweet, Microsoft has announced that they will also be replacing their realistic gun emoji with a cartoon-like stylized water gun, following the lead of Google and Facebook, who made a similar announcement earlier today.

Saying “We are in the process of evolving our emojis to reflect our values and the feedback we’ve received” the change reflects the increasing demand for gun control in the USA due to ongoing high profile mass shootings.

Microsoft’s current emoji looks like this:

After Apple, WhatsApp, Samsung, and Twitter, and now Google and Facebook have all switched or committed to switching, Microsoft was the last major hold-out for a realistic firearm. The change will likely be implemented as part of a general update to Windows 10 coming with the Spring Creators Update, which also brings a number of other emoji-related improvements.
