Microsoft today announced that it is acquiring XOXCO, the developer behind popular Howdy, the first commercially available bot for Slack that helps schedule meetings. Microsoft is acquiring this development studio because of its conversational AI and bot development capabilities. XOXCO’s Botkit provides the development tools used by hundreds of thousands of bot developers on GitHub. Using botkit, developers can develop and publish bots to Microsoft Teams, Slack, Webex and Twilio SMS.

“With this acquisition, we are continuing to realize our approach of democratizing AI development, conversation and dialog, and integrating conversational experiences where people communicate,” said Lili Cheng, Corporate Vice President, Conversational AI.

“Microsoft already offers a rich set of tools and resources for bot builders through its Azure Bot Service. We are eager to explore bringing together the best of both offerings to Botkit developers, and I’m excited to see what we will achieve as the leading community of open source bot developers in the world”, wrote Ben Brown, co-founder of XOXCO.
