Stories format which was one of the highlight feature of Snapchat has now been adopted by Google. Starting today, Google will show AMP Stories for users on Mobile and Tablet platforms. The Google AMP Stories format will be directly in competition with Snapchat and Facebook.

On mobile devices, users browse lots of articles, but engage with few in-depth. Images, videos and graphics help get readers’ attention as quickly as possible and keep them engaged through immersive and easily consumable visual information.

Google plans to allow publications to show images and videos to convey the latest happenings around the world. This concept was first introducted by Snapchat as Snapchat Discover which allowed publications to show news using interactive cards. Snapchat’s VP shared his views with TechCrunch on the launch of Google’s new AMP Stories.

Our ambition at Snapchat is to empower great storytelling, and we think we have pioneered the best format for doing that on mobile. We’re delighted to see that an industry is starting to form around that, and hope that it will encourage more newsrooms to invest in teams that focus on made-for-mobile content.

For now, Google’s AMP stories will be showing up for users on mobile platforms. The company does plans to extend it to other products and services in the future. The company hasn’t announced official dates for the release yet but you can go to g.co/ampstories from your mobile to take a look at AMP Stories.
