Tens of thousands of Oculus Rift users have run into a strange error today which effectively disabled their headsets.

The “Cant Reach Oculus Runtime Services” error has been caused by an expired certificate for the OculusAppFramework.dll, which was created in 2015 and not renewed since.

Users are able to work around the issue by setting their date back, but of course, this solution is less than ideal.

Users are currently awaiting a software update to fix the problem, but the incident is a reminder that when it comes to technology these days we very rarely own anything, and that nearly every piece of technology we think we own, from our phones to cars, can suddenly stop functioning due to license issues.

Follow the issue at the Oculus Forums here.

Update: A patch is now available which can be downloaded here.
