Microsoft has confirmed a significant issue in its latest Windows 11 Canary build, affecting those who utilize NVIDIA graphics. The problem is caused by crashes within the DirectX 9 (D3D9) component, which causes apps to fail to launch.
[NEW] We are investigating a d3d9.dll crash which is causing multiple apps to fail to launch starting with Build 27802 for some Insiders.
Why is this happening?
Windows 11 Canary build 27808 users who have been affected have found that applications that rely on DirectX 9 will fail to start. The D3D9 dynamic link library (DLL) is the culprit, which crashes when it comes into contact with NVIDIA GPUs.
This bug mainly affects applications and games that render graphics using DirectX 9. Due to the widespread usage of DirectX 9 in older software, many applications might be impacted, rendering them useless.
Are there any workarounds?
While an official patch is in the works, some have attempted to use workarounds. One involves replacing the D3D9 DLL files in the System32 and SysWOW64 system folders with files from previous builds. But you’ll have to first disable the NVIDIA GPU from Device Manager. However, this is not an official workaround and may not work for you.
Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and is working on a solution. If you’ve been affected by this, make sure to check Microsoft’s official announcements for updates and possible patches.
