Key notes
- Windows 11 hit 36.65% market share, while Windows 10 declines.
- Microsoft now offers a $30 Extended Security Update for Windows 10 until October 2025.
- On the other hand, Office 365 apps on Windows 10 will lose support in October 2025.
Microsoft has been pushing users to upgrade to Windows 11 for quite some time, since Windows 10 is approaching its end-of-support cycle on October 14, 2025. And now, it seems like the effort is paying off.
Statcounter notices that Windows 11 reached a 36.65% market share as of January 2025, while Windows 10 continues to decline, now at 60.33%. Previously, Windows 10 was at 62.7% in December 2024 after long months of decline starting at least in May 2024. For Windows 11, the trend seems to only be going up from now on since April.
While users can continue using Windows 10, they wonโt receive security updates after that date. So for that, the Redmond company offers a $30 Extended Security Update (ESU) for Windows 10 users ahead of its end-of-support in October 2025 to give your PC another year of life.
Microsoft will also stop supporting Office 365 apps on Windows 10 after October, the same date Windows 10 is retired. This includes essential programs like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams. While these apps will still work, they may start to experience performance problems without updates, and security risks will increase over time.
For now, though, Microsoft is still shipping updates for Windows 10. The recent KB5050081 update for Windows 10 recently addressed several issues, including a fix for the Snipping Tool that previously stopped responding when using Windows logo key+Shift+S with Narrator on.
This update also brings the new Outlook app for Windows to Windows 10 and resolves problems with USB audio devices when using certain DAC audio drivers.
