WhatsApp is developing a feature called “Private Processing” to support upcoming AI tools like message summarization and writing suggestions without compromising user privacy. This system enables AI interactions to occur in a secure cloud environment, ensuring that neither Meta, WhatsApp, nor third parties can access the content. The feature is optional and requires user to enable it, aligning with WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption standards.

WhatsApp, with its Private Processing feature, will use both Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) to mask user IP addresses and a Trusted Execution Environment to prevent data retention after the session. Meta plans to allow independent audits and will include the system in its bug bounty program. A detailed security design paper is also forthcoming.
Despite these privacy measures, the integration of AI features has faced criticism from users who find the Meta AI assistant intrusive and non-removable. Some users have expressed concerns over the assistant’s prominence in the app and potential privacy implications.
Meta continues to expand AI functionalities across its platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, while emphasizing user privacy and control.
