Update: Activision is actively taking down Call of Duty: WWII reveal trailers on YouTube. The fact that Activision is issuing copyright strikes may lend some credibility to the leak.

Last night a post on Reddit supposedly leaked the upcoming Call of Duty title from Sledgehammer Games. The posters and SteelBook prototypes point to a World War II setting. A few weeks ago Activision said that the next Call of Duty game would go back to the franchise’s roots and put players’ boots on the ground. If these images are indeed genuine, then the next game in the popular franchise will be titled Call of Duty: WWII.

Players have been asking for a historical Call of Duty game for years now. The fact that Activision has been pushing futuristic warfare for years has turned many people away from the franchise. While the Call of Duty games remain the best-selling titles in the United States every year, sales have declined. This historical Call of Duty game should definitely overcome that slump because it’s exactly what gamers want.

Battlefield 1 reinvigorated the franchise by taking it back to World War I. The game is one of EA’s biggest successes and proves gamers want to immerse themselves in history. As with any leak, take it with a grain of salt until we have official confirmation from Activision. Hopefully this title exists because Call of Duty has been its best when they’ve explored history…just look at Call of Duty: Black Ops!
