Key notes
- Samsung has filed a patent for improved AR experiences with dynamic light-field images on upcoming Galaxy phones.
- The technology generates 3D images using 3D data and pre-stored patterns, adjusting in real-time based on user distance or surroundings.
- The AR light-field images can be overlaid on live camera feeds, offering more immersive 3D visuals.
Samsung has recently filed for a patent application, potentially for its upcoming Galaxy phones. And with that, these devices may be able to view and interact with dynamic light-field images for a better augmented reality (AR) experiences.
The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has recently published a 27-page document that details this system, which was filed back in March 2024 but only published in February 2025.
The South Korean tech giant wants to render multiple viewpoint images from 3D data and combine them with pre-stored mapping patterns to achieve so.
Then, the technology generates a light-field image that could be displayed with AR capabilities and also suggests that this light-field image could be dynamically adjusted in real-time based on your distance from objects or overlaid onto live camera feeds.
Basically, the control unit manages the display of the light-field image by transmitting image data to the timing controller, which then outputs the image. The light-field image, which may be an AR one too, can also be superimposed on a real-time image so that it looks more 3D in your eyes.
Changes in position or surroundings, detected by GPS or the camera, can also influence how the AR content is displayed.
Samsung has recently released its Galaxy S25 smartphone lineup, and there are a lot of things to be excited about. The tech giant recorded a staggering 1.3 million pre-orders record in its home country of South Korea, which surpassed the S24’s figures at its launch.
