OpenAI has implemented some changes to the usage limit policy for its ChatGPT service, which has brought out mixed reactions from users. Previously, users were familiar with a fixed limit of Limit 40 messages / 3 hours. However, the company has now replaced this with a more vague statement: Usage limits may apply. This comes after over half a million users signed up for ChatGPT Enterprise, exceeding everyone’s expectations.
This change has brought up discussions among users, who have expressed frustration. Many admit that at first, they were glad to hear this change, but when they used and tested the limit, many were quite disappointed by their findings. While some say the change has increased usage allowances, user experiments have revealed stricter limitations than expected.
Numerous users have reported hitting the usage cap earlier than expected despite having used the service within what they perceived to be reasonable limits.
I wanted to test this. I’ve already used only 5 messages today. I just tested by asking it to increment a counter for me with every message. Very sad to say, but at the moment I was only able to get to 17 before the message cap. Being generous and adding 10 to this (I used less than 10 messages so far today I am certain) that means the cap was no greater than 27 messages…
Frustrated by the limitations, some users have explored alternative platforms, such as Libre Chat, Gemini and Claude 3, which offer greater autonomy and flexibility. Others have voiced their dissatisfaction with the unpredictability of usage limits and the lack of clear communication from OpenAI regarding the changes. You can read all the comments in this thread.
As we continue to navigate these changes, we expect greater clarity in OpenAI’s changes. We will report back if OpenAI reveals anything about this.
