On May 22, 2025, Microsoft rolled out a significant update to Windows 11’s Notepad, introducing a new AI-powered “Write” feature. This addition allows users to generate text based on prompts, marking a notable shift from Notepad’s traditional simplicity.
The “Write” feature in Notepad enables users to draft new content or enhance existing text by right-clicking within the document or selecting the option from the Copilot menu. A prompt box appears, where users can input instructions, and the AI generates corresponding text. Users can accept, refine, or discard the output. This feature complements earlier AI tools like “Summarize” and “Rewrite,” which offer text summarization and rephrasing capabilities.

Access to these AI features requires a Microsoft account and operates on a credit system tied to Microsoft 365 or Copilot Pro subscriptions. While basic usage may be free, extended use consumes AI credits.
The integration of AI into Notepad has sparked discussions among users. Some appreciate the enhanced functionality, while others express concern over the departure from Notepad’s minimalist design.
