Microsoft's Recall Feature Finally Arrives on Copilot+ PCs After Year-Long Delay
On April 25, 2025, Microsoft began rolling out Recall to Copilot+ PCs, nearly a year after it first announced the feature. Recall records encrypted snapshots of on-screen activity every few seconds, letting users search their past actions using natural language. The feature processes everything locally on the device and requires Windows Hello to access saved content.
Users can delete individual snapshots or turn off recording for specific apps and websites. Microsoft made Recall opt-in following backlash about privacy when the tool was first unveiled. Users must manually activate the feature through Windows Update by selecting “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.”

Recall launches as part of the April 2025 non-security preview update to Windows 11. It arrives alongside two other AI features: Click to Do, which suggests contextual actions for highlighted text, and a revamped Windows Search that handles natural language queries better.
These tools are available on Copilot+ devices powered by Snapdragon, Intel, and AMD chips. Microsoft plans to expand availability over time, including a release in the European Economic Area later this year.Recall’s local processing, encryption, and opt-in status mark a clear shift in Microsoft’s approach to AI and user trust.
