After making the bottom address bar available behind a flag, Microsoft is testing a fresh new UI for the New Tab Page in bottom omnibox mode in Edge Canary.
The bottom address bar, also known as the “bottom omnibox,” has been a highly requested feature among mobile users. Placing the address bar at the bottom of the screen makes it easier to reach with one hand, especially on larger smartphones.
Until now, users could enable the bottom address bar in Microsoft Edge for Android by toggling a flag in the browser’s experimental settings. However, the New Tab Page layout remained unchanged. With the latest update, Microsoft is addressing this by testing a new NTP layout that supports the bottom omnibox.
The “Enable NTP new layout in bottom omnibox mode” flag will “use new UI layout in bottom omnibox mode,” as Microsoft notes in the flag description.
How to Enable the New Tab Page Layout for Edge on Android with Bottom Address Bar
- Launch Edge Canary
- Visit edge://flags
- Enable the “Enable NTP new layout in bottom omnibox mode” flag
- Restart Microsoft Edge
Note: You must also enable the bottom address bar in Edge via the flag and select the “Bottom” option for the address bar in the Appearance settings to see the fresh New Tab Page UI.
