Back in December last year, Microsoft Bing announced several new intelligent search features powered by AI technologies. Today, Microsoft announced improvements to those features, and also announced new scenarios that get you to your answer faster. First of all, they have expanded the intelligent search features to UK and they have improved our quality and coverage of existing answers. Read about them below.

An improvement rolling out this week will offer insight into unfamiliar topics at a glance. When Bing recognizes a word that isn’t common knowledge, it will now show you its definition when you hover over with the cursor. For example, when you search for a medical question, if there are some terms in the answer that you aren’t familiar with, you can just hover over to get the definition without leaving the page.

Bing already allowed you to search within an image to find similar images and products. With improved intelligent image search, users can now manually select a desired object by manually cropping around them. Using this built-in object detection feature, users can find more information about the objects that are in the images.

Bing team runs deep neural networks on Intel Arria and Stratix Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) on the order of milliseconds to deliver these features. Microsoft mentioned that Intel’s FPGAs have enabled them to decrease the latency of their models by more than 10x while also increasing their model size by 10x. You can learn more about it here.
