Lenovo has been playing fast and loose with the second screen on a laptop for some time now. We have seen the company launch two Yoga devices in the past that replaced the traditional keyboard with a touchscreen.

Now it looks like Lenovo is planning to target Apple and its touch bar with the latest patent. The company titled “Multiple display device” was filed by Lenovo in 2016 and was published by USPTO on February 5, 2019. The patent explains the concept of a mini touch panel fitted on a 2-in-1 laptop. The patent goes on explaining how the min-touch panel can be used to display important information as well as used an input device.

For example, where the device is operatively coupled to a user’s smartphone, the mini-display may render call information, email information, text messaging information (e.g., instant messenger, etc.), etc. to the mini-display as associated with one or more accounts of the user’s smartphone, which may differ from one or more accounts of the user’s device (e.g., a laptop computer)

– Lenovo

There is no word on if/when we will get to see an actual device based on this patent but it’s good to see Lenovo taking inspiration from Apple’s Touch Bar concept and turning it into something that can be actually useful and productive for the users.
